What do you do if you have 3 history degrees, 2 children under the age of 5, a husband, and you don't want to work for a big company or live in the big city? Buy a bookstore, of course! And that is just what Gillette and John Kempf did in September, 2006 when they took over Borealis from Laura Spilman. Gillette and John slowly expanded the offerings at the bookstore over the next three years, adding new books, greeting cards, and Melissa & Doug toys.
Then February 9, 2010 happened....
When Gillette unlocked the door that morning she discovered a waterfall in the back of the store and lake lapping at the front door. Quick thinking on the part of family, friends, and fellow downtown business owners rescued the remaining stock and four months later, there was a Grand Reopening with a new name and new location: An Open Book, 114 Jefferson Street South, Downtown Wadena.
You will always be greeted with a friendly smile by Gillette, John, Hailey, Jaime, Alex or Cherie when you walk through the door. An Open Book specializes in outstanding customer service. With over 20,000 titles in stock it is pretty hard to leave without a "find". If you are looking for a particular book that is not on the shelf, they will order the book for you, even hard-to-find out-of print-books!.
An Open Book features Melissa & Doug® children's toys. From puzzles to puppets, plush to play food, magnetic activities, music and more, Melissa & Doug® is one of the leading designers and manufacturers of educational toys and children's products. Melissa & Doug® has something for everyone, with over 1000 unique and exciting products for children of all ages!
An Open Book is expanding their stationery department, adding Positively Green and Borealis Press greeting card lines as well as Minnesota calendars, note cards, and journals.
SpiritWolf Loft on the mezzanine features books, bags, incense, essential oils, and more centered around health and wellness for mind, body, and spirit. Currently, Yoga classes are offered on the mezzanine level on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
An Open Book co-hosts a monthly book club that meets on the fourth Thursday of every month at 5:30. Upcoming books to be discussed are The Man Who Loved Books Too Much by Allison Bartlett in March, The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver in April, and Silas Marner by George Eliot in May. New book lists are selected by book club participants every four months.
